Best way to install bar ends on a straight bar road bike
 

Hello,

I recently bought a straight bar road bike. I really want to add some bar ends to get some different hand positions for my long rides.

Do I just cut back the end of my grips to install them? I have SRAM grip shifters, so that would make my grips pretty narrow. Is there a way to extend my handlebar an inch or so to apply bar ends?

You would normally loosen the shifters and the brake levers and move them.

If the rubber grips are closed at the ends, you will have to cut the ends off and slide them and the brake levers/shifters inward enough to clear the bar end's clamps. After you add the bar ends, put bar end plugs into the now open bar ends.

Do you have the room to move your brake levers and shifters in? Then just move the grips in a bit and add the bar ends. The grip shifter does take up more room then a brake/shifter combo. I do seem to recall that there is a bar end that goes inside the bar as opposed to clamping on the outside of the bar.

If your grips have closed ends, remove the grips and make sure there Are not plugs in the ends of the bars... then slide them back on and repeatedly whack the end of the grip with a hammer so the end of the bar cuts a perfct round hole in the grip (probably not a good idea with carbon bars), then you can slide the shifters, brake levers and grips inward to make room for the bar ends.

You should also put plugs in the ends of the bars after doing this.

You can cut the ends out of the grips quickly with an X-acto knife. That way you don't have to resort to "hacking" it with a hammer. (oops, I ment wacking)(no I didn't)

You can cut the ends with an exacto, but whacking with a hammer actually produces a cleaner hole.

Thanks for the info everyone. I was able to move the grip shifter and brake in 3/4" or so. I originally thought the grip and grip shifter were all one piece, so I was taking the easy road and was looking from some type of extension for the bar ends.

However, I think I figured out the best way to do it, thanks to all of you.

Isn't it made by Cateye or Serfas?
