Convert Long Cage RD to Short Cage.

Question:

I have one of these:
https://cgi.ebay.com/CAMPAGNOLO-VICTO...d=p3286.c0.m14

If I purchase one of these:
https://cgi.ebay.com/Campagnolo-Victo...3286.m20.l1116

can I use it to convert the long cage derailleur to a short cage? Are there any issues I'll run into or additional parts I'll need?

Thanks for your help.

Dan

What do you hope to accomplish with the conversion?

Mostly just satisfaction of my curiosity.

I have a Bianchi I am restoring with a standard double. It came with a mix of Suntour and Campy parts. I want to use the Suntour parts on another project so I need a replacement rear derailleur and downtube braze-on shifters. I picked up a set of shifters and a long cage Victory RD this past weekend. Nothing wrong with it, but as I was installing it, I just wondered if it could be converted to a short cage.

According to Sheldon Brown, there is no benefit to you for your conversion. Tried to look for the link, but I can't find it, although I am positive that's what I read.

This is essentially a waste of money. It *may* shift a little crisper with the short cage but you lose the ability to run different gear ranges easily.

Gentlemen,

I'm not planning on changing this derailleur. But, if for instance, I crash the bike on the drive side, could I rebuild the RD with the short cage kit?
As I said, it was something I was curious about. Nothing more.

That being said, my question still remains unanswered. Would that kit allow the long cage to become a short cage?

Thanks,

Dan

Depending on your gearing range the short cage may not be able to adjust so you may loose some of your gear options. Likely in a pinch, for instance if you "crash the bike on the drive side, could I rebuild the RD with the short cage kit?". It might allow you to ride but with shifting restrictions.

Thank you. Good to know.
