Is it dumb to own two Surly Crosschecks???
I currently have a Steamroller and Crosscheck. My Steamroller is my beater and my Crosscheck blings. I put most of my miles on my Steamroller commuting every day. My Crosscheck is for the occasional long distance tour or mountain type ride.
But lately I've itching to ride offroad fixed/ss on a monster cross style bike. I'd fix my current Crosscheck but stripping all the gears and swapping bars is a huge undertaking. I want that bike to be ready for long rides at a moment's notice.
So my idea - Liquidate the parts box, sell my Steamroller, and build a SECOND Crosscheck. One Crosscheck would be geared for touring and long distance rides or offroad riding that requires gears. And the second would be my bike to abuse, riding fixed and single offroad, and taking to work every day.

The only problem I see with your plan is the idea that you would sell your Steamroller. What kind of cyclist are you? Don't you know that the optimal number of bicycles to own is always n+1 (where n=the current number of bicycles that you own)?
Seriously though, the name means nothing compared to how the bike is set up. I would think it strange to own two bikes that serve the exact same purpose, but two bikes for different purposes is completely reasonable. Let's recall our Shakespeare here, "What's in a name?"

Don't flame me, because I have a Cross Check and it is a great ride, but you may be a perfect fit for the fixed Cross bike the bikes direct sells now. Or maybe a new Bianchi San Jose. Both would be cheaper than building another Cross Check.

it would be pointless to sell any bike. n+1 4life. two of the same bike is a great idea if you don't mind having a different version of the first crosscheck. i have like 17 bikes, have a specific purpose for most of them, but don't need one for all of them. that way you won't bash out your first xcheck off road, yet will also know exactly what your original one can handle.

It would be a little silly two own two Crosschecks, so keep your steamroller, for the reasons mentioned above, and by yourself a Long Haul Trucker for your touring/mountain riding, then use your Crosscheck for single speed cross.

You should really get a third for racing while you're at it.

Methinks you asked this question in the wrong website. Suggesting parting with a bike in any thread on Bike Forums is like spouting satanic messages in church.... At best it's just wrong and at worst it could wind up with you commited, spewing pea soup from your mouth while your head spins around and some guy in a dark bath robe yelling latin over you.....
I'd go N+1 and then after a time and IF you don't ride all three bikes consistently then it would be time to look at swapping the least used bike for something new/different.

I guess as the poorest person on this thread, I would have to say sell what you don't want or ride and get what you want.
I see logic in your decision on owning two CCs, both in a different format. I own three Hardrocks. One is a SS permently attached to the Young Prince's tag a long and is stripped down to bare bones. One is getting setup as a SS commuter with rack and bags, fenders, lights, and goodies. The third is awaiting its flip/flop wheelset.

I don't see a problem with selling off a bike, if you aren't using it.
The only thing I'm not sure of is whether the differences between the Steamroller and CC are substantial enough to merit a whole new build. I know the geometries are different, but it seems like if the wheels can take it, you can at least put cross tires & fenders on the Steamroller and see how it goes.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
I have a similar situation...
I have two nearly identical Kuwaharas with one set up as a drop bar, fixed gear tourer and the other is a flat bar fixed gear urban assault vehicle.
If I had a third I would probably do something to make an internally geared version.
