Need help bad w/ Shifting problem

Can anyone help me out with a little problem? I cleaned my bike the other day and obviously committed a dire offense in the eyes of the bike gods because now there is no shifting detent. I believe thats what it is called at least. No click occurs when I shift and my rear derailleur half shifts and sets in between gears. The gear shift is just one fluid line through the gears, there is no noticable click when it sets into a gear. Id love some help to fix this before it gets any worse, thanks to anyone who might know!

Are they downtube or barend shifters? The ring on the rear shifter has two positions; indexing and friction. I presume you inadvertently turned yours.

Be sure to check the cable-tension. If it worked itself loose, tighten it - carefully. The anchor-bolt is likely alloy. And alloys are liable to stripping if too much torque is applied.
