Quick release seat stay

I just got a road bike that has no quick release seat stay, i.e. i need an allen key to adjust the seat height. I want to ask if it is normal to have no quick release seat stay for a new model road bike?? I changed it to quick release by replacing the bolt. Is it bad to the frame??

It is quite normal to just have a fixing bolt instead of a quick-release on the seat tube. Saves a little weight, and most road bike positions don't need to be changed on the fly, so the QR isn't really necessary unless you need to remove the seatpost to fit the bike inside a vehicle.

Yeah, QR seat bolts are more appropriate for MTBs. On a road bike once you get seat height dialed in there's not much reason to change it. And not good for a bike that will get locked outside.

(For the second reason my commuter-oriented LBS has a big bin of takeoff QR bolts, $0.50 each. I used a bunch of them for mounting solidly-attached-yet-quickly-removable motorcycle panniers.)

The only pewople who like QR bolts on a road bike are the cretins who steal seats...

That's exactly what i was thinking cos i just got a new seat. I think i should change it back to fix bolt. But why MTB still use QR? Don't they afraid of seat thief?

People that ride their MTB's mainly offroad like/need the ability to quickly adjust seat position depending on trail conditions. Although this is done less frequently on full suspension bikes.

Quick-release seat post release mechanisms did not exist before mass-produced MTB's came on the scene in the 80's.
