Campagnolo 10s chain length...help please
 

i think i cut the chain too short. did the large cog to large chainring measurement method as explained on park tool's website. and for some reason, i came up short.

anyone have some advice here on a way i could get the right chain length?

i still have the existing piece that i broke off. from what i've researched, i can get super links or wippermans connex to attach those links back or, spend a little more to get the campy links. or, am i just screwed and need to get a new campy chain? or maybe spend a little less to get a non-campy chain that's compatible with my 10s drivetrain?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't use removable links to attach the remaining chain segment. SRAM Power Lock could probably be used, because it hasn't been designed to be removed without chain tool.

yeah, i guess that sounds a bit sketchy with the removable links.

i'll look into the SRAM Power Lock. if that doesn't work, i should probably just pick up the campy link kit, huh?

I Don't agree with that, I cut my Campy chain too short and used 2 removeable links to re-add a section. The mechanics at the LBS said go for it, they would feel bad charging me for a $30 link kit when two removeables will do the trick. Just make sure when you cut the chain again you dont cut it at the master link that you hooked up when you put it together, cut it elsewhere.

now, as far as getting the right chain length so i don't screw up again...it's big to big + 1 or 2 links? see, i forgot to add links the first time.

It's Big Big +1. If in doubt, always cut 1 link long.

Funny that this thread is at the top. I installed a chain for my new commuter last night and was going through and adjusting my deraillers tonight. I went to shift into the big/big combo and it wouldn't complete the shift and didn't feel quite right (on my workstand luckily). I look back at the rear derailler and notice that it's pulled completely straight. Oh *****. At that point I realize the mistake I made in my haste which was removing two links after doing the big/big check. Luckily, I had another 9 speed chain (SRAM) available to install as I don't have any joining pins and not even sure they make them for 9 speed SRAM chains. I'll just use the short chain on my MTB which uses fewer links than my commuter.

I've installed quite a few chains over the past few years and not once made a mistake in the chain length. I must have been really out of it last night.

did the big big + 1. i have 2 removable links (super link III's) to put my mistake back together. and everything is cool so far. gonna take it out for a spin tomorrow.
