What size hub wreches for older DA?
 

I'm going to rebuild my hubs, and I have older Dura Ace hubs on my bike. Not sure what series, but they're probably 7400 series hubs, as the rest of the equipment on the bike is of that vintage. So I need to know what size hub wrenches to get: 13/14 or 13/15 or something else?

Well I bought the Park Tools 15mm last night and they're too big. I guess I'll try to exchange them for the 14mm, unless anyone can tell me to go to the 13mm instead.

since this is a road bike ,i would go with the 13 mm ., your locking nut would be 15 mm.

Front will likely be 13 mm and rear 14 mm. Dura Ace hubs, at least the 9-speed ones, use a 13/14 pair for the front hub and a 14/14 pair for the rear hub. Their locknuts require a cone wrench too.

For most other Shimano hubs, the locknuts are 17 mm and a regular 17 mm open end or box wrench will fit as they do not need a cone wrench.

Thanks HillRider. So you're saying that the front will likely need one 13 and one 14? So, I'll need a total of two 14mm wrenches and one 13mm?

You probably need a set. The inner cone is usually smaller than the outer locking nut. Park Tools are nice but probably not worth it if you just have a pair of hubs to do. Usually, just taking one set of the end is enough and pull out the other side with the locking nut, washer, and cone all together. Then you can just use 1 13mm on the loose cone when you put it back and the bigger one on the other side. HTH!

13mm is the standard size for the front wheel cone nuts and 15mm is the standard size for rear wheel cone nuts on a wide range of wheels that I have worked on. I have a 14mm cone wrench as well but I don't use it for much.

I have a new set of Shimano Ultegra hubs that I'm about to build a wheel around. I just overhauled and re-packed 'em. The front required a 13mm & 14mm. The rear took a 14mm & 15mm. You can't go wrong having 13mm through 15mm cone-wrenches. I have a full set of the Park's and duplicates in 13mm and 14mm.
