seat post length

Where does the measurement start on seat post? Do they count the clamp? or where the tube ends? I don't want a longer one than what I need...

It's easy enough to cut one down, but am not sure how they measure them (if there's even consistency among manufacturers on that point).

I measured one a while back just for the heck of it and it was just the tube, no clamp area, etc.
