In the Navy, we inspected the carp out of known fatigue areas and were always on the lookout for any cracks anywhere.

If areas were found that had cracked on other airplanes, we would do a NDI (non destructive inspection). This usually involved stripped the paint in the area and then applying a penetrating fluorescent dye. Cracks would show up under a black light. Then when you were done, you had to prime it, paint it and put it back together.
