Status Report 2: Old Cannondale, torqued cranks, chainline out, front der next
Folks;
Having as much fun with this old bike as putting small block chevvies in old cars!
Pulled the Sugino cranks and BB (the Sugino BB rebuild was the subject of an earlier thread, successful but still overgeared). Put on a Campy Mirage CT, 50-34 on a Veloce BB. I could not torque the BB cups using the Park tool but feel like they're quite snug.
Torqued the crank bolts to 28 ft/lbs, on dry spindle tapers, per Campy's specs, and measured the chain line with a digital caliper. Campy specs the CL at 43.5 mm from midline of the BB (or seatpost). I got several measurements ranging from 43.87 down to 43.53 mm, with the higher number being the most reliable. Now, .37 mm is vanishingly small, about 1/70th of an inch, or .0145 inches.
Do I need to worry about this small variance? My gut says "ride the bike." What say you?
And the Suntour front derailleur appears to pick chain up and let it down on the rings, without adjustment as to height or stops. It's a braze-on. I'll mount a new Wipperman chain, wrapped big-ring/big-cog, add two links, and try the whole thing. The Wipperman came out of my spares box, from my wife's first ATB.
Have noted the interest in photos, and will take some of the new components and show them in an upcoming status report. Is there interest in having more of this stuff?
