34.8 derailleur on 26.x seat tube

Hi,
I'd like to mount a 34.8, clamp-on derailleur (SRAM Rival) on an old steel bike with a traditionally-sized seat tube [EDIT: 28.x? Whatever it is...]. Is this going to work if I shim it, or will the derailleur position somehow be off with respect to the chainrings. (I'd expect this to work but just wanted to make sure before I buy something.)

Thanks,
Daniel

The last time I bought a Shimano FD, instead of being able to choose a specific size, it came in 34.9mm with adapters for 28.6mm and 31.8mm. Adapters are available here:

In other words, you're wanting to mount a derailleur with a 1 3/8" clamp on a 1 1/8" diameter seat tube. I've made shims out of PVC pipe- you'll want a piece about 2 inches long to make sure the derailleur is stable. They've worked fine for thousands of miles.

It's possible that the Low limit will not be far enough inboard on the derailleur to work with your particular crankset/bb. If you're running a crankset with very tight clearance with your frame, it's less likely to work. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. In my experience. -C
