Alfine hub, chainline... and cranksets
I'm in the process of choosing cranks to match to an Alfine hub on my Bianchi Volpe frame. The old Tiagra triple chainrings are incredibly worn, and I want to switch to a more modern BB system. I'm thinking of buying a Tiagra Hollowtech 2 BB double (53-39), and taking off the 53 tooth ring to leave me with a 39 tooth crank.
Should this work, at least in theory? Perusing the eternally helpful Sheldon Brown's page, I've deduced that the inner ring on a road double generally has a chainline of 41mm, while the Alfine is at 42mm. Close enough?

I kind of wanted to go to an external BB for ease of... everything related to a crankset.

41mm is close enough. My experience is that if ANY crank has a chainline thats within 1mm of spec then thats good going. Ie, by the time you get it setup it may have a 42mm chainline anyway.

Taking off the outer ring will work, but it's going to be very ugly.
I'd go with the Sugino RD. Velo Orange has them in a polished finish.
I don't see any advantage to the external BB.

The thing about a new Tiagra crank is that they go for under $50 on ebay brand new. An alfine crank costs close to $100, as do these Sugino solutions. I'm not so much concered with how it looks. Uglier the better I say, though it would be nice if it were black. I missed an Ultegra SL crank, brand new, for $56 the other day. Kicking myself over that. Beggars can't be choosers.
I'm confused about HT II cups though... I can't find any info over whether Ultegra/105/Tiagra are interchangable. Campy makes this nice and simple (who would have thought? haha) - does Shimano?
