Question regarding the hub cone

I was servicing my hubs yesterday, the first time I have dine so and there have been about 5000 miles or so on this wheelset. I replaced the ball bearings and the grease in the hubs. The reason I did it the first place was because my front wheel wasnt rolling smoothly on the hub (when I held the axle in my hand and spun the wheel). There was noticeable friction and grinding.

Anyway after I changed everything and reassembled the hub, I still noticed the tightness, in fact there was more friction. I then discovered that I had over tightened the cones that hold and if I loosened it a little bit and the hub rolled smooth again. Now the questions is how loose is ok? Right now there is no play in between the hub and the cones but I am afraid about more dust entering and the grease getting out.

Any advise appreciated.

If you have quick release skewers, a tiny bit of side play is okay. If you have nutted axles, adjust until you have no side play. If the seals are not damaged, the tightness of the cones has nothing to do with the dust seals. They seal against the flat side of the cone. The grease will not run out. Neither of those concerns are issues for you.

Thanks Jsharr. Right now there is no play so I think I am all good.
