I'm using a 28/46 double on the front (using the middle and inner positions of a road triple crankset, the 46 tooth is unramped) plus a 11-26 SRAM 10-speed cassette on the back (or sometimes a 12-23 if its a flat ride and I want really tight spacing). I love this setup. It shifts beautifully with an Ultegra long cage rear derailleur. For the front derailleur, I've now reverted to an Ultegra triple. I tried a mountain bike front derailleur for the front, which matched the arc of the 46 tooth ring better, but never shifted as well (cable pull was never a problem because I use a down-tube friction shifter for the front, while keeping an STI to control the rear).

I would therefore recommend going with a wider range on the front rings, and keeping a narrower range on the back. This will avoid the problem with a road RD not being able to handle the big cogs on the back. Plus, its a lighter setup overall.
