new crankset compatability?

hi. this is my first pot here, so here goes...

I decided to swap out my crankset, and the one I'm looking at is "9 speed HG compatible" but I have an 8 speed cassette. Do I have anything to worry about?

also, my shifter goes from 1 to 8, does that mean I can't switch to a 9 speed cassette if necessary?

Welcome to the forums.

HG means Hyperglide
, a system by Shimano generally descriptive of the rear hub interface. So, if your 8s cassette is HG also, then you are fine. Keep in mind that the crank doesn't really care what the speeds are and the possible minor width difference in the crank teeth at negligible for all but the most discerning riders.

If you bike was made in the mid-90s or later, chances are you have a HG system. I also am not sure if a HG crank would not work with a UG (Uniglide) system, that is it will work no matter what, due to my logic that the crank could care less....

Your shifter's compatibility is variable and depends on what it is. Here are some good guidelines.

I suggest doing research yourself or taking it to a (LBS) local bike shop before doing anything drastic based on what I can assume from your line of questioning. Parktool.com and SheldonBrown.com, if digested, can make you better than some bike mechanics out there so check them out.

Also, when asking for such broad help, pictures or information about your bike (year, model, etc.) would be helpful.

Good luck.

The crankset will work fine with the setup u have. It might work fine even with 10 speed.

If you are using shimano indexing 8 sp shifters, u wont be able to use the 9 cogs, maybe 7 of them because as makes sense in the same space now u have 9 cogs, not 8. If you have shimano brifters, the same situation.

If you have are using, shimano friction or whatever u want to call it type of shifters, yes u "may" be able to use the 9 cogs with no problems. Maybe even 10 will work using friction shifters.

Good luck

thanks for the responses & advice.

the bike is a GT mountain bike bought in 2002. my bottom bracket was getting clunky so I needed to swap that out. it came with a cheap Suntour crankset that is showing wear, so I decided to replace that too while I was at it. I pulled the pedals, cranks & BB last night.

The cassette is also Suntour. based on the link above, it is also HG (I rebuilt the hubs a few weeks ago, so I had that apart and got a look at it)

I believe I'm going to get a Shimano Decore M532 as a replacement. the external cup bearings seem to be the "in thing" now, so I guess I'm going with that system, even though I like the cartidge system just fine. If you have any comments on the external BB cups, lay them on me...

I am new to the mechanics game, but have been doing research and going in to the shop. I went through the hub overhaul with a mechanic so I made sure I had the adjustment right. I like to ask random questions on forums like this because I can throw it out there and come back later for answers. thanks again, i'm sure I'll have more questions soon enough.
