every now and then when shifting from the big chain ring to the little one my chain drops off on to the bottom bracket. the funny thing is it will work perfectly most of the time, any ideas ?.

The first solution is to dial in the low limit screw a tiny amount to keep the derailleur from going quite so far in toward the bike.
The second solution is kind of counter-intuitive: dial out the high limit screw a tiny amount. Mechanics often set the high limit screw by shifting into the big/little gear combination and screwing the limit screw against the derailleur. That sometimes causes the front derailleur to bind and, when it finally releases, it throws the chain forceably over the small chainring.
The third option is to install a Chain Watcher or similar device to catch the chain when it over shifts.

For about $10 I almost always install an N-Gear Jumpstop chain guide plate on the seat tube next to the granny gear. This will catch any falling chain and guide it onto the granny.

+1 Low limit screw adjustment. Might just need a very small adjustment.

another +1 for just readjusting the low gear limiter screw before you buy anything else. adjust little at a time, and you probably need to tighten it up a little.

and yet another +1 for adjusting that limit screw, also tightening your derailleur cable just a little.
