from 8 speed to 10
Hello,
I have a campy record 8 speed set up on my bike. I would like to go to 10 speeds. I understand that the shifters and rear derailer need to be changed. I got a record ultra 10 set up used but in very good condition. What I am trying to find out is if I must change my rear wheel because it has the 8 speed hub or if the 10 speed hub will work on it with spacers. Any help on this would be great.

RD probably doesn't need to be changed. If anything the 10-speed cassette is *wider* than the 8-speed so spacers are irrelevant. I don't know Campy well so I can't say what else it might take.

Well, you'll also need a 10 speed chain in addition to the cassette and shifters. The front derailler would more likely need to be replaced than the rear derailler (for the reasons DMF alreadt stated). When the chains were made more narrow, the FD cage was also narrowed to match (at least with Shimano). A 9/10 speed crankset might offer more reliable shifts with it's more prominent ramps and pins designed to pick up the narrow chain.

Hi.. i'm not that sure but i believe a 8 speed campy wheel is not compatible 9 and 10 speeds. The cartridge shapes are different and i believe it is a little bit wider. Even the lock ring thread it is different between 8 and 10. The 8 speed RD doesn't work because campy changed the pull ratio also. The front derailleur might work fine. In a matter of fact if you dont have a 10 sp qs levers even a shimano fd might work from what i've read.

8 to 10 speed
Ok well i guess it is just give it a try and see what happens. I used to build bikes and have just last week built one. I just didnt and dont really know how things can be swapped around. I will still have to see if a 10 speed cog set will go on my bike. It looks like it would with maybe just a little pull. I dont want o ruin things for this, so I will just give it a try and see what happens. Thanks for all the help.

There is an article in some campagnolo site that explains all the main differences between 8 and 10 speeds. Even sheldon tells something about it.
