Inner cable size - Shimano

I am thinking about replacing my shifter cables on a Shimano STI Tiagra system with brifters. REI has cables in 1.1 mm and 1.5 mm sizes. I just read that 1.2 mm is the standard size used by Shimano. Will the 1.1 mm cables work, or do I definitely need 1.2 mm cables? I was planning on using the old cable housings.

Thanks.

1.1 is fine. Go with new housing too.

1.1 mm will be fine. If the housing is several years old and/or has been exposed to bad weather with some frequency, new housing is also worthwhile. Be sure to get "SIS" or index-shift housing. Don't use brake cable housing and DON'T use the shift housing for brake applications.

I would definitely replace the housings. I think the housings are at least as important as the cables when it comes to shifting performance.
