Front Derailure for 80's Fuji road bike

In December I purchased an old Fuji road bike as an early Christmas present. I got it in working order with a little jerry rigging and help from my LBS. I am now looking to replace the front derailleur with one intended for the bike. The one I have was sourced from an old Road Master, and while it works, the odd shape causes the pedal to rub on it when using the outside sprocket. Furthermore, the shifter cable on the current set up has to be routed under the bottom bracket, where as the LBS told me the original part attached in such a way that the cable simply attached straight from the down tube to the derailleur. I figure the orriginal one was made by Suntour, as are the rest of the components, but does anyone know what model (or alternatives) i would need to have it all set up right?

Not sure what model, but sounds like you need one with a housing stop attached.

Check in the Classic & Vintage forum...

There is a ISO/WTB For Trade thread and if you ask there, someone is bound to have what you are looking for.

In fact, I may even have one floating around if I get to my parts shelf before someone else....

What you are seeking is pretty commonly found in the parts bins for many of us that wrench on vintage bikes.

The SunTour may be a "High Normal", which is opposite of typical FDER's.That won't make difference in usability, but might take a bit to get used to.

Another option is to get a clamp-on cable stop and install it at the very bottom of the seat tube. This will allow you to use a modern front derailleur, no problem. You run the cable housing from the last cable stop on the frame under the bottom bracket and up to the clamp-on cable stop. Then run the bare cable to the derailleur.
