PLEASE HELP! Stronglight Crankset & BB

I'd really like to talk with someone that's installed a stronglight crankset with the "activ link" set-up. The directions are worse than horrible and it's not installing at all as "plug-n-play". Torquing to spec(40Nm) is way too tight and begins to bind and cause the crank to not spin properly. I think it's actually binding the goofy spacer that "floats" inside the cups.

I would really love to even have someone explain the activ-link concept. I don't get it? A loose spacer floating in the cups? How does that provide ANY advantage? Seems to me it would just add weight...

Any input or help with this setup would be greatly appreciated.
