    Gear "slips" and odd sounds

I'm new to cycling so please excuse me if I don't really use the correct terms.

I recently bought a Jamis Coda for riding around town and the problem I am having is when I shift from 3 to 2 it seems that it takes a while for the chain to actually catch, almost like it has no gear for a full revolution. Also when I go to a really high gear it sounds like the chain is scraping against the guard.

I have a feeling I probably incorrectly "fixed" a chain that I dropped. Is this what happened? How should I fix it?

aside from the "dropped my chain" comment - it sounds like the derailers need adjusting. when the chain doesn't move over enough it won't catch right away - that's the position of the lever, or the cable length, or the adjuster barrel needs a tweak- when it rubs against the spokes it meas it moved too far over - that's the limiter screw
cycling is like baseball ~ it doesn't take much to make it interesting

I assume 3 to 2 on the big ring?
You are changing by approx. 10 T. It takes about 1/2 rev just to complete the chain transfer, plus you are in a much lower gear, so it takes a moment to speed up your cadence and start "pulling" again.

Your scraping is probably from cross chaining. That's using the largest ring with the largest cogs or the smallest with the smallest.

One would need to be psychic to answer your chain question, since you didn't provide ANY details of what you did.
