Very dumb crank removal question

I've got to remove the FSA Gossamer crank on my Giant. Am I wrong in thinking I can get the crank off without breaking the (Shimano) chain? I should be able to start with the chain on the small chainring and lift the chain off this chainring as i extract the crank/axle assembly. Am I missing something?

No problem doing it that way. Just lay the chain on the BB shell andget to work.

It should work fine. If for some reason you need to you could also just dump the chain in the front then remove it.

I simply shift to small:small to remove as much tension from the chain and lay it on the shell.
If you're one of those "real sticklers", you can even use a rag to keep the paint clean!
