I am installing a SRAM dualdrive 3x9 rear hub on a folding bike. It replaces an 8-spd rear hub. I got the hub at a song and now need to find a shifter. Ridiculously, SRAM only sells the ENTIRE DRIVETRAIN and you apparently cannot buy the hub shifter by itself. Also, on both the harris cyclery and gaerlan websites they state that "no other shifter is compatible" with the 3x9, except the one you must buy with the rest of the drivetrain (for like $180). Seems to me I ought to be able to use a friction shifter on this, but I am not very familiar with these hubs (except that I have a 3x7 on my bike friday tandem that I really love.)

Anyone know if you can use a friction shifter, or any other readily available 3-spd shifter to operate the newer SRAM 3x9/3x8 Dual drive hub? Thanks in advance.

(please don't recommend that I just put a triple ring - there are numerous unacceptable problems related to doing this.)

Yup. just ordered it. I guess when one looks for specialty items, one sometimes neglects to look in the obvious places. Thanks - that was a life-saver. and a HUGE bargain at 18 clams!!

I know this is an old thread, but I was informed that any sti levers will work with the 3x9 by the UK distributor.However other people have been told differently by the same company. Whats the truth?

SRAM cable pull ratio is exact 1:2 that of the same speed STI. You could get the rder to shift, but need shift 2 indexes to shift one cog. Then you would only use half your cogset. If you add a pulley system, you should be able to compensate the 1:2 ratio.

The internal gear hub does not use the same pull ratio as any fder, nor any other brand of internal gear hub. I believe the torpedo 3 shifter has the same pull ratio as the dual drive, but cannot confirm it-I have Sachs 3x7s, 3x8s, P5s, and Torpedo 2s, so have no Torpedo 3 shifters to verify that.

You can use any rear derailleur you want with the SRAM Dual Drive hub, so the rear derailleur can be made to work with STI shifters. Dahon sells their SpeedPro TT bike with STI shifters and a dual drive setup. In short, yes, it will work. Does it need tweaking? I have no idea, since I don't have first hand experience.

I know that the rear mech is not a problem, but the 3 X 9 internal does not seem to find the lower gears with this STI set up.Nor can I find them manually.I wounder if I need to refit the spring aspect of the 3x9, which I have removed to allow it to be used with the usual toggle chain rather than the click box of the 3X9 set up. It does not matter as the bike is a road bike and I dont need them ,but it would be nice. Yes your right about the dahon, but that uses the 3X8 hub I believe.I also have the 3X7 hub and this is definately compatable with STI.

I will ring Fisher the Uk importers again for suggestions.

Problem sorted !

Once I used a cable stopper clamped to the rear chain stay to ensure the cable did not move when folding, it shifted really well in all gears. The internal gear change using STI race levers and the click box is much smoother than when using the SA type chain linkage. The 3X 9 works well in this set up but one of the click postions is best ovided, persumerably due to the pull ratio.

Agian simple cure, I change one click from 3rd to 2nd and two clicks from 2nd to 1st.This becomes automatic after a while.

I have also found that once I removed the cover from the click box, it did not foul on the wheel nuts and that the click box caused no more of an obstruction when folding than the standard SA linkage.
