12 gauge hub

Can anyone give me the diameter of the the hole in a hub that would accept a 12 gauge spoke?I presently have a 14 gauge hub and wish to switch to 12 ga.I assume I will have to drill it out,if there is enough meat in the flange. Thanks Ron

Based on 14 ga spokes being currently defined as 2.0 mm (~0.08") and 15 ga spokes as 1.8 mm (0.71") they seem to pretty much follow the US Steel Wire Gauge and British Standard Wire Gauge convention. By those standard, a 12 gauge spoke would be about 2.68 mm (.1055").

Are you building a motorcycle wheel?

I'm looking for the threads on a typical 12g spoke. I have to cut some down and need to purchase a die to rethread them. Unless you know somewhere that does custom spokes.

Talk to a local motorcycle shop that deals with customs or a Harley dealer. Many of those bikes still use wire spoked wheels and they will have the tools and knowledge to handle larger diameter spokes.

Another possibility is a shop that deals with harness racing sulkys. There are still some traditionalists that are using spoke wheels, and I believe they use 12 or 11 guage spokes.

Although not 12 guage, Bike Tools Etc has 13/14 butted custom length spokes. They are as strong as 13 guage spokes, but accept standard spoke nipples.

spoke threads are rolled, not cut with a die.

Why do you want 12 guage spokes?

I'm thinking this might not be the best idea. Here's why:

The way that hubs generally fail is for the flanges to break out at the spoke holes. If you enlarge the spoke holes, you will be removing material between them and weakening the hub right where they generally fail. If you aren't careful about chamfering the spoke holes the square edge will cause even the thicker spokes to break more easily too.

I'm assuming that you want to use the thicker spokes in order to build a "bulletproof" wheel. Spokes are relatively cheap and easy to replace. Hubs are a different story.
