using 9 speed chain on 8 speed cassette?

Hi,
I have a new shimano 8 speed MTB cassette, and want to buy a chain for it.
I saw the Sram pc890 for 8 speeds and the PC991 for 9 speeds.
What is better to use on the 8 speeds configuration ?
I prefer the pc991 because I have another bike with 9 speeds that I'm going to buy this chain for it.
So I will have the same kind of chain on the two bikes.

Thanks,
Kfir

The nine speed chain should work fine on the 8 speed cassette, but an eight speed chain is usually cheaper than nine speed and they're more durable.

Why is it necessary to have the same chain on both bikes? Like Well Biked said, the 9 speed chain will work but 8 speed is cheaper.

Its for a touring bike. One is mine and one is my girlfriend.
I thought it will be good to have spare links to the same chain and not for both.

Good thinking - and, you can have a spare chain around, for a spare for either bike.
