    direct me towards some barcons?

so today I swapped the flat bar on my Scott SUB 30 for a drop bar. Stem was compatible, I even got the trigger shifters on the flats, as a temporary fix. I'm really surprised.

I've been looking at those Dia Compe road levers that work with V-brakes, and will probably get those. My question now, is about barcon shifters.

Can someone direct me to a site that sells indexed barcons that aren't the madly expensive SRAM or Dura Ace ones?

    thanks in advance.

How about telling us how many speeds you're running.

As far as I know, SRAM and Shimano are the only options for indexed bar end shifters. How many speeds do you have? 8 or 9? Current DuraAce shifters index for 10, so they won't compute with mountain bike setups. Older 8 and 9 speed barcons are still available, I just got a set of NOS 8 speeds from Shimano.

Loose Screws has Shimano 8-speed Ultegra bar-end shifters for $80. Look here:

Rivendell has the same thing for $75:

SRAM doesn't make 8-speed bar-end shifters, so you're stuck with either Shimano or putting indexing downtube shifters on Silver mounts. I'm somewhat sure that Shimano doesn't make them any more, but Universal Cycles still lists them: http://www.universalcycles.com/shopp...1&category=774

BTW: Shimano has only made one "grade" of bar-end shifters. Aside from the early Dura-Ace, there's nothing that distinguishes the shifters from one another. My 7-, 8-. amd 9-speed bar-end shifters are absolutely identical except for the number of clicks.

Shimano listed the 8-speed as Ultegra and 9 and 10-speed as Dura Ace. I suppose they can charge more that way.

If you can get hold of some Cane Creek "Drop V" levers (see manufacturers page here) then I would get those instead of the Dia Compes because the hoods are more comfortable on the Cane Creeks.

Check EBay - that's pretty much your only option for sub-$70 indexing barcons. If you don't have to have indexing, there's always the venerable Suntour barcon.
