Aaaaaaahhh! New(ish) chain!
So my Dumpster Queen 1983 Raleigh Marathon has been great since pulling her out the dumpster, but I kind of felt a tick every so often, maybe every third of fourth crank rotation. I figured it was the chain, but hey, they bike's old, who cares, right?
Yesterday, it got much, much more distinct. Not so much a tick, but more of a clunk. No crank jump or anything, but you could hear it and feel it.
So last night I pulled the chain off my Nishiki Olympic 12 (which was very lightly ridden before I wrecked it last year) and put that on the Marathon. Today's commute was like floating on air. No more clunk!

Yup. A new(ish) chain can solve a multitude of sins. What brand of chain did you dredge up? My favorite (still is) were the old Sedisport chains. They just plain worked.

It may be just a stiff link (easily fixed with a bit of lube and lateral flexing) or one link that has become bent (it happened to me when a small rock got caught in the link). Other possibilities are that the chain has become stretched and is not longer engaging the chainrings and cogs cleanly, or that the chainrings and/or cogs are too worn. Hope this helps.

The chain came off my old Nishiki Olympic 12. I have no idea what kind of chain it is.
