i want put some mid 80's Suntor shifters & hook it to my 64 S/ARCHER chain control 4-speed hub,which is held in gear all by tension,will it work ? i know the cable will be different,the hub works more like a index shift ,,where the suntour levers are not,,any suggestions?

It would be possible to shift that hub with a friction shifter, but in practice, it is difficult. If your shifting isn't close to perfect it will prematurely wear the hub gears, so it isn't recommended.
