Okay, so i just bought this new NEXT mountain bike yesterday and today i was riding and then it wouldnt go any further. the pedals still work, the chain is still intact, and is still on the freewheel, and the front and back derailers. it even runs smooth when moving the pedal. BUT...its not moving my rear wheel, therefore...i cant move. since i know nothing of this sort of thing, can someone give me some help/tips/advice on whats wrong and how to fix this.

How is it not moving the back wheel? Is it that you pedal and it spins the freewheel cogs but does not spin the wheel along with it? Or is it that when all put together the chain doesn't move when you try to pedal? What part is seized up and is there anything caught in the chain or derailleurs?

You bought this bike yesterday and they have a policy that prevents them from taking care of you as a customer? Good Lord! What retailer is this? If this bike was bought new, from any reputable retailer, it has a warranty. Even NEXT has some sort of warranty I'm certain.
In the event that you bought used or from a retailer without scruples, please describe your problem in a little more detail. Do the pedals rotate but the rear wheel does not or does the entire pedal/crank/wheel not turn when you sit on it. Is it a dual suspension bike? Is the seat post so low that it is contacting the tire when the seat has weight on it? Please be a little more descriptive.

Are the pinchy things not letting go of the back wheel?
The lever on the right side of the handleber controls the rear brake - make sure that when you pull the lever it is smoothly squeezing the rear brake mechanism. If not, check the cable to see that it is properly seated.
It kinda sounds like it slipped out of it's guide and is not releasing.

Wal Mart? Try a different register or the manager. I would do everything to try and get that bike returned for a full refund. Sounds a typical poorly assembled bike, that was not all that great to begin with. Once you get that taken care of, buy a 10 to 20 year old refurbished bike. Even at that age
they're ten times the bike that Next was right off the assembly line. I wish you luck!,,,,BD

the rear wheel does spin FREELY when i want it too with my hand. nothing is getting caught, the chain, pedals, freewheel, cogs, whatever all move together very smooth as if nothing is wrong with the bike. idk, maybe it does have something to do with the weight. but it was working fine as i was riding it and then all of the sudden, BAM! it stopped. i can keep pedaling as i should, but it wont move my rear wheel as like something inside is loose/broke of something isnt tightened enough. yes dual suspension.

it sound like the freewheel (the gears on the rear wheel ) have gone bad. the only to fix it is to replace it. what state do you live in ? if the store is refusing to repair it under the warranties then go see you attorney general and file a complain. by law the store is to repair or replace the bike for free for the first 30 days.

Did you pay with a credit card? If so, call your credit card company and complain. They usually can exert quite a bit of leverage on merchants through their "charge-back" process.

So the freewheel spins as you pedal but the wheel wont move? If so, sounds like the pawls in the freewheel have fallen out or broken somehow. The only fix there is to remove the rear wheel, remove the freewheel, then repair or replace it. Thats not a easy quick fix. Wal Mart. Sheesh. I've seen what they sell, theres no BIKES in there! LOL! Good luck!

Those freewheels blow up all the time. The bike is junk, do what ever you need to do to get your money back. It could happen again if they fix it.

Is the axle firmly attached to the drop outs? If not, when you pedal, the tire will move against the chain stay on the drive side and possibly lock up in conjunction with hitting the brake pad. If you have fenders it gets worse.
Now that I posted it.... I think it might actually rub on the non drive side.

Come on guys, don't be so critical. I bought a Next bike in 05, as of now have 10 K miles on it ,full suspension. I paid $98.99, made some changes though, took all the derailleur stuff off, and put on a internal 3 speed, always like the 3 speed. No real issues with the bike, will never buy anything but a full suspension again, it's awesome.

skywalker, definitely return it for a refund. If they keep refusing that, post back here with more details and we can help you out on strategies. The root problem here is that the bike looks nice and has parts that look like real bike parts (brakes, wheels, suspension), but in reality they are so cheap/weak they won't function properly for long, if at all. Any replacement that store gives you will have the same type of issue.
If you want to give us some idea of your price range and what type and extent of riding you hope to do, the folks here can provide a number of alternate choices that should actually be usable.

It does sound like freewheel pawls. Not a simple fix; you would need to rebuild the rear wheel. The best strategy is to take it back- this is definitely a manufacturing defect. Don't let the the nay-sayers disparage your bike- although it's probably not a very high quality bike, it really shouldn't have that problem in the first day of use. Any retailer should take it back for a full refund- if they don't then I've had a great result in the past from filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. You can do it online. Make sure to get the store manager's name and mention it in your report- he will lose his job over this, and he knows it. I've done this about a rebate card from a cell phone company, and a vice presdent of the company called me up and asked me what he could do to resolve it. Good Luck!

If you can get the retailer to take the bike back (they often offer a replacement bike rather than try to fix simple mechanical problems) see if they will exchange it for a non-suspension model of higher quality... on a basic bike like that, rear suspension is just one more thing to go wrong, unfortunately.
Most of the problems with department store and multi-sport store bikes stems from the fact that they are not assembled properly. If you can bring a new X-Mart bike to a real bike shop for a tune up before it falls apart underneath you it is likely to give you much more trouble-free service.
Good luck. I am sure there are a dozen people (including me) reading this thread who would be willing to call the store and "explain" why they should refund your money... but you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar.... and if honey doesn't work use a fly-swatter

The bike is defective. Period. The retailer needs to either fix it, replace it for a non-defective product, or refund your money. If you're not getting satisfaction, you're talking to the wrong person. The only retailer shown at next-bike.com is walmart. I'm certain all walmart stores follow the same company guidelines, and I doubt any store mgr is empowered to create their own store policies...regardless of what s/he may think. So, again, you're probably talking to the wrong person. Don't screw around with this person; go to the next level.
Incidentally, did you look in your owner's manual. Next cust svc is 800-551-0032.
BTW, there is no expectation on your part to figure out how to fix the bike. And perhaps this unpleasant experience is telling you to choose another route for getting a bike.

Almost all states have a "lemon law". Look it up. They must accept returns for a brief period if it's broken and there's no sign that you broke it from abuse.

A NEXT bike you buy today, the brake pads will wear out in a week, the freewheel usually breaks, steel rims that aren't anywhere near true, the list goes on. I have people come in with their week old NEXTs that need $100 of service and they are still POS.
They can also get rid of that Full Suspension and save 10lbs.

I bought a 2005 Next double boinger, and I don't think it is all that bad. Of course, it got me interested in riding bikes again, so I bought a real bike shortly thereafter. Then another, and another, and another..... You know how it goes. So I haven't ridden it much. I did replace the lousy rear wheel with one that has a free hub instead of a freewheel. It has been out on loan quite a bit, and other than flats, it's given no trouble.
This is actually the second one, I took the first one back after a week because the freewheel was wobbling worse than any I've seen before or since. They replaced it with no argument at all. They should do the same for you.
