Installing a handlebar shim. . .

I'm trying to put a 25.4-->26.0 shim on my handlebars and I can't seem to figure out a good way to get it in there. I have a quill stem that doesn't have a removable faceplate. Any tips or suggestions?

Install the handlebars and center them. Then expand the gap in the stem to create more clearance and slip the shims in place. With some stems you can expand the gap by installing the clamp bolt backwards and insert a washer or penny for the bolt to press against. With other you have to wedge something into the gap to make the clamp temporarily larger.
