Stem reversal
I'm thinking it is a simple matter to reverse a stem. Is that correct? I put drops on my hybrid and it is so great but In tweaking the "fit" I think I would like the bars a bit closer to me and I don't want my seat too far forward because I heard it can affect one's thrust. Here's a pic of the bike. I believe there is no adjustment other than the pivoting arm. This is a fairly new (3 yrs old) Schwinn Trailway. The stem has no identifiers of it's own.

You might consider getting a shorter stem with the angle that suits you best. For the angle, it looks like you are one step ahead of the game - you have an adjustable-stem there. Use that to "dial-in" what feels right. Then get one that comes the closest to what you have found from the dial-in.
That looks like a pretty cheap adjustable-stem. I'd be glad to be rid of it myself. If you want a good adj-stem, look into the one(s) offered by Ritchey.

What's going on with the brake levers and shifters? Did you just put the orignal flat-bar components on the drop bars?

Drop bars use different shifters and brake levers, which can be pretty costly. Thats why we continually have discussions about trekking handlebars.
You also have a lot of seat post showing. Is bike frame too small for you?

Don't use your stem backwards.
This would put your handholds Behind the fork pivot point, which means when you want to turn left, your upper body has to swing right, and vice versa. Thats going to be pretty unstable handling.
