Can I use a generic shifter cable for my Shimano Alfine interal gear hub?

Or is it a proprietary one?

Nexus and Alfine shifters use a regular MTB cable.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

MTB or Road or Hybrid or Touring or...

Modern shift cables do not card what type of bike they go on. THere is no difference between MTB and Road for shift cables.

Oil the new cable (not grease - that can harden sometimes) and drip some oil down the housing before running the cable. It helps.

This is generally true, but not universally so. Not to pick nits, but some older downtube and stem shifters had a transverse head on the cable, and so called universal cables do not fit all road shifters. MTB cables are universal for MTB and MOST road shifters, and those are the ones that fit the shifters in question.
