Oil the new cable (not grease - that can harden sometimes) and drip some oil down the housing before running the cable. It helps.

This is generally true, but not universally so. Not to pick nits, but some older downtube and stem shifters had a transverse head on the cable, and so called universal cables do not fit all road shifters. MTB cables are universal for MTB and MOST road shifters, and those are the ones that fit the shifters in question.
