Compact Crank - New Front Derauiller

Opting to try a new(er) Campy compact crankset.

My front derauiller is vintage early 90's.

Will that ol boy be able to handle the 16 tooth difference (50-34) on the chainrings ????

Thanks

Keith

Sometimes they work ok. If your old one worked for a triple, it should be fine. Often compact FDs have a deep inner cage and a long tail that surrounds and can push sideways on the chain while in the small ring.

VeloOrange is selling this:

which should be a decent thing to try. I'm thinking of it for my Woodrup with a Veloce compact.

Thanks...........!!!

I'm trying to keep the bike Campy but I do have some FSA stuff on my XC bike and I like it.

I would think that Campy front derailleurs for triple chainrings should work ok.

just get the FD low enough, properly lined up with the chainrings and there should be no problem

Do not use a Campy triple FD with a compact. It will shift it, but it also requires a lot of trimming in the little ring. I tired mine just for kicks and didn't like the function.

When compact first came out, most Campy users just lowerd the height of their double FD by 6mm and found that it worked fine. Campy also offered a compact specific FD for a few years, but reports on it were mixed. Some users found it tough to setup and thought the standard FD worked just as well.

Campy no longer makes a compact specific FD. Starting last year, they offered only one double FD that handles both compact and standard cranks. That FD design works great with a compact.
