Ultegra Brifter with 1/2" of play
I have looked for something on this but haven't found anything. My rd brifter has a good 1/2" of play before the rd moves. Is this proof the brifterer is worn and needs replaced or can they be rebuilt?

It sounds like it's just in need of a good cleaning. over time the factory grease that is applied when the shifters are made get thick and gummy, causing the shifter to not fully return after a shift. spray some finish line speed degreaser in it and keep moving the lever until the indexing comes back. once you have all your clicks again blow it out with some air and lube it with triflow or something of that nature. 9 out 10 shifters that i clean out like that come back to life.

If we were allowed to assume the shifter was in the first position and the cable was too slack, then one could blame it on cable tension (or lack of).

Let me explain myself better... with the shifter in any position but the last there is 1/2" of movement on the lever before the cable movesat the downtube. The slack seems to be in the shifter.

It is definitely better, lost 1/8 inch play, Maybe as the it works it's way in. I took the air line and blew it real well. I dd get some gunk out too.
Thanks

It easier to do to mtb shifters as they are easier to fully disassemble so you can actually see the mechanism. There's a little pawl in there thats not falling back into the knotches for the indexing. You may want to reapeat the process a few times, if you're just spraying it. make sure you work it in order to get that pawl to move. you want to work the degreaser in there then the lube.

I think that play may have always been there. I once had to take appart a Shimano brifter that had a cable head snap within the brifter. I was able to get everything back together except one final spring that held the lever straight down. The brifter worked, but it would swing freely for about two inches. So at least in my model, the first few inches of motion don't pull against the cable tension, but against this extra spring. Maby this spring broke in your brifter.
