Cracked rim, worn chainring...
So I've been off the road bike ('99 C'dale R600) far too long and need to get back into action. I gave the bike a once over and noticed many problems. For starters, there is a crack in the rear rim by one the spokes. The rims are Mavic CXP 11, 32 hole with Shimano RSX hubs and DT Swiss 15g steel spokes. Should I just replace the rim and try to rebuild the wheel myself? Should I have an expert do it? Or should I buy newer wheels with 105 hubs? It should be noted I'm on the heavier side (215lbs now, 180~190lbs when I'm in shape).
The next issue is my 53T chainring (Shimano 105). Some teeth appear shorter than others; like they've worn down. If I replace the chainring, do I need to replace the chain and rear cassette? I measured the chain per Sheldon Brown's method and it was fine. The cogs look okay too, but I'm no expert. Maybe I'll post pics here once I thoroughly clean them this weekend. Oddly enough, my big chainring on my C'dale Jekyll 800 has some shorter teeth as well. Maybe it's by design? Or maybe they've taken more than their share of tree bark? I'll have to check my wife's bike for comparison...

A cracked rim must be replaced. Wheelsets are available for less than the cost of the components in many occasions. Look into Colorado Cyclist and Performance for some available options. If you decide to build it yourself, start with Sheldon Brown's dissertation on wheels:

I'd suggest 105 hubs or better. There are good deals going with sets of Mavic rims, DT double-butted spokes, and Shimano Ultegra hubs. Have your cranks checked by an expert. No one can analyze then over the internet - but a new chain couldn't hurt. Maybe a new cassette?

Worn teeth usually looks like sawtooths, with one side worn a bit too much.
Park tool's Big Blue Book has a really nice cut away shot demonstrating what constitutes a worn tooth. Compare to that.
I'd say unless you've got the tools already to rebuild the wheel, buy a new one.

Thanks! So maybe my drivetrain issues aren't issues at all! I decided to buy a new wheelset. I purchased Mavic CXP22 32H with Shimano 105 hubs and DT 2.0 spokes from bicyclewheel.com Seems like a good replacement for what I have, while upgrading the hubs to the 105 spec the rest of my bike has.
Sat. I plan to give the bike a thorough tuneup and will further inspect the chain, cogs, and chainring for wear.
