setting up an internal hub

I have recently seen an SRAM internal hub on sale for cheap and I was wondering whether anyone has any experience using these hubs. I was thinking about putting together a commuter around that hub. Ideally it would be based on a 'cross or touring frame. In fact, I think it would be fun to race cross with an internal hub bike, since there are less traps for mud. I was wondering what i would need in terms of frame? Would it be ok to use dropouts (horiz or semi-horiz), since sheldon brown indicated it is not always necessary for track drops.

Also what is the feedback like? is it worth the trouble to set up? What is the weight penalty like?

Many of the members of the Yahoo Geared Hub Bikes group linked to in my signature block below have done IGH conversions. You are welcome to join and ask plenty of questions.

An older frame with semi horizontal dropouts works very well as does a frame with track dropouts. Frames with vertical dropouts usually require use of some form of chain tensioner, an added hassle and added weight. Total weight penalty should be in the 1 to 2 pound range unless converting to the NuVinci hub as you are removing a number of parts when adding the IGH. Usually removing 2 derailleurs, 2 shifters, 1 or 2 chain rings and the original rear hub with casette or freewheel. Adding 1 IGH and 1 shifter.

I have an older track dropout equipped road frame converted to a 5 speed SRAM hub that I enjoy and am working on an old Peugeot PX-10 conversion to the Shimano Alfine hub. The Peugeot has semi horizontal dropouts.

IMO a steel frame is an excellent candidate as the dropout width of most can be modified as required to match IGH OLD width.

One consideration for doing something like a Cyclocross bike is overall gear range. Choose your hub according to the gear range needed for your application, not necessarily cost. It is possible to set up a bike with dual front chainrings, a front derailleur and a rear chain tensioner to provide increased overall gear range too.
