Bottom Bracket for '78 Fuji Gran Tourer

Greetings everyone,

I'm looking to buy a new-old-stock sealed BB for my Fuji, but have no idea what size I need, or proper technique for measuring the old one.

There is "3S" stamped in the middle of the old BB, if that helps at all.

Thanks!

A Fuji (Japanese bike) from that era should be standard English-threaded (68mm) bottom bracket, so you're in luck there.

Beyond that the bottom bracket you get should depend on the crank that you have or intend to use with the bike. The goal is to get proper chainline (front gears lined up with rear gears) and to have both pedals be the same distance from the bike's centerline.

Why do you want NOS? Why not just new?

Thanks for the info on the 68 mm!

As far as why I want NOS...I'm not sure! I've found an eBay store which sells NOS parts exclusively.

My cranks are square taper. Are there new BB's which still accommodate this type? I was assuming (and probably wrong) that all were octalink style now.

From SB, 3S is a 121.5mm spindle offset 5.5mm to the drive side. You'll doubtfully find a sealed equivalent, as they are almost uniformly symmetrical now, but SB says to substitute a 127mm one to give the right chainline. You will end up with a wider "tread", or "Q-factor", on your crankset.

You know, I might even have an old loose ball one. It's not new, but it should give you some service, if your current one is now toast. I'll look for it tomorrow. Edit: It's a 5SS, 124.5mm
