Problem with Wheel Axle

Hi,

I'm currently modifying a cheap mountain bike for my relative. She wanted to have pegs in the back, which required me to replace the axle since it originally had a skewer on. I bought an axle from Harris Cyclery that had the matching dpi. The axle I bought seemed to be right since the nuts threaded on. However, the nuts threaded on very tightly. When the nuts were in there were no signs that the threads strip or anything so I suspect that the axle was just made badly. I feel that the threads on the axle were not cut deep enough. Is this often the case with axles made from Harris Cyclery? I don't know any other place where I can get a good solid axle since it will be fitted with pegs.

I doubt I can get my current axle exchanged, since I got it back in 2008.

Oh by the way, when I tried to fit the pegs, it stripped the threads on the pegs and damaged the threads on the axle. So I need a new axle regardless.

Most likely you got a 10x1mm axle from Harris. The pegs were 3/8" x 26tpi.

I'm not even sure you can get pegs in metric threads. And to get a 3/8" x26tpi axle into that hub, you'd need to replace the hub cones and lock-nuts. Finding cones with the correct curvature would be difficult, not to mention the dust-caps as well.

Easiest way is to get a new rear-wheel with bolt-on hub with 3/8" x 26tpi axle.
