changing downtube shifters from indexed to friction

I had to change my bike from a five to a six speed freewheel. so i need to change the shifters to friction. But mine are missing the rings that you would use to rotate it to the friction setting. IS that what needs to be done to change it? i tried sticking something into the holes, but it was pretty difficult. i can keep trying though.

See that little ring? Pull it up and twist it in the direction of the white arrow just above it (or the other direction, depending.) That should do it.

I'd suggest you hunt for some downtube-shifters that are not missing vital parts. eBay?

I can imagine it's easy. But I think he should learn this with as few encumbrances as possible. If he doesn't understand the functions involved, then he'd be learning to be a parrot.

Hold onto your current shifters (friction), but use new, complete one's for this build on your bike.
