Changing forks

i have a beater frame (a schwinn hybrid) that is actually a very good commuter, but has a sr suntour suspension fork that i would like to replace

https://www.srsuntour-cycling.com/SID...tail&tnid=2322

(the forks do not have any pre-load adjustments). if it really seemed to do any good, i would keep it, but i cannot tell that it makes any difference beyond adding weight. i have never, nor do i know how, to service this contraption, and just kicking around the idea of a fixed fork and be done with it.

my shortlist is for the kona project II cross fork

https://www.cambriabike.com/shopexd.a...+II+CROSS+FORK

and the surly long haul trucker

https://aebike.com/page.cfm?PageID=30...ils&sku=FK0901

from this i would like to know which one of these two would work, or any other recommendations as a replacement. maybe even some instructions to go along with it.

Good question. I have been thinking of replacing a somewhat tweaked rigid fork on a older Schwinn Sierra with a LHT fork -- wasn't sure if it would be compatible. I know that head set would and stem would need replacement (threaded to thread-less) but did not know if the steerer tube diameter would be an issue.

2 issues you need to check out. First, steerer tubes are typically either 1" or 1 1/8" so you will need to determine which your bike has. Second, you will need a suspension-adjusted fork to keep the geometry of your bike the same.

Suspension forks reduce efficiency and add weight. These are not big selling points for a commuter bike.
