Stuck barrel adjuster on Allez
Hi, I have a 2004 Allez Elite and I was fiddling with my shifter barrel adjusters earlier today and in the process, somehow got it stuck!
I am able to use the towel+pliers method to kind of turn it but it's not very practical in the long run and I don't want to risk damaging anything in the process. I tried pouring some water on it and spraying penetrating oil inside and all around it but it doens't seem to work.
If there isn't an alternate way to fix this, can I somehow just use pliers to break the plastic piece and somehow just replace it altogether? Are they part of the frame of cable housing?

Are these the inline type? Are they the ones on the down tube? In either case you will have to remove the cable to get the parts off. Replace the cable and the adjuster on the down tube. If the inline type just leave it off.

I am not sure what 'inline' but it is solidly attached to the down tube. If it is attached to the down tube, is it replaceable?

Sometimes they can be replaceable like the one shown. The frame should just have some female threads on a stud that is attached to the frame (white part), you dont want to brake these. Then there is the plastic sleeve that grips a hollow bolt that screws into the female threads on the frame (black part). I would remove the cable housing, since they can sometimes seize to the plastic part or the hollow bolt inside making it hard to turn. Good luck.

Thanks for the picture. I was wondering how do you separate the cable housing from the barrel adjuster?

The cable housing should just pull off once the cable tension has been released. If not the housing is stuck in the barrel adjuster and you would likely need new housing and barrel adjuster.
