popping bubble wap

A couple of nights a go I got a flat maybe 300 yards from home. Carried it home & put it on the repair stand & fixed it. Took it off the stand & rolled it a few feet & I hear pop, clickity pop, pop, crack. Huh? Lift up wheel & spin it, nothing. Back on the ground & roll it & again it sounds like someone popping bubble wrap. Pick it up spin it but again all's quiet. So I put it down & just roll it around me, pressing the bike down as I do so. Starts out popping & snapping but quickly fades out completely. Hmmm...

So air trapped between the tire & tube, dimples between tube & rim tape at the spokes. Something else? Doesn't seem to beaproblem, just a curiosity.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

I have had this happen primarily with Specialized brand tires, but I am sure it happens to many tires. I always figured the tire does not really hold air all that well, so when the rubber tread is laid over the porous casing it creates the potential for thousands of tiny balloons, and when a tube is pushed into a tire and inflated it pushes trapped air through and inflates the tiny balloons.

Just a guess, tho.

add some talcum powder between the tube and tyre.

first time I've heard of this, but the powder should be able break the seal on those bubbles.

It does sound like the tire and tube are sticking together and their deformation is making and popping small bubbles. While it's probably fine to ride in the short term, this could be an indication of increased wear on the tube (something you wouldn't normally have an issue with) and something like talcum powder should stop it.

Beads can crackle and pop a bit when they are easing into place. But your sounds like a more sustained event.

New tube & new rim tape (2 wks old), year old tire. I usually do use the talc but didn't use it this time. No noise since then.
