Turkey wing brake lever removal

I have seen this answered but didn't need to know until now and can't find the thread.
When I take the turkey wing levers off can I remove the Frankenstein hardware that held it on or do I have to leave it?
I didn't want to start the disassembly and have it all fall apart.

Thanks for any help.

After you take the levers off there will be a little stub of metal sticking out that they used to rotate on. A few minutes with a hacksaw will get that off of there no problem.

The hoods of the levers will not be very comfortable without the rubber sleeves that they were supposed to come with instead of those "turkey wings." I'd really recommend dropping a couple bucks to pick up a pair of Tektro brake levers. They are really comfortable and will make a world of difference in your braking power.

You can take it off, but the pivot bolt will stick out the side of the brake lever. I have removed these from a couple of bikes and I just hacksaw the pivot to the correct length. The ones I have done have a ridge that lines up with the lever body, so it is easy to see where to cut. You may be able to buy the shorter pivots, but I am too cheap to do that! If you put brake hoods on then you won't even know it has been cut.

Edit: Sturmcrow types faster than me!

You might be able to find similar levers for cheap. Ask your LBS if they have a junk box you can root through. If you find non-functioning levers, you could take the pivot pin from them. I've done that sort of replacement.

Buy a set of the Tektro or Nashbar aero levers -- comfort, nice hoods and better braking force. Under $20.
