Clutz politely asks for help with Sturmey 5 Speed single shifter.

I have a Sturmey Archer 5 speed hub (S5.2) which uses two wires but has the large single trigger shifter as pictured below.

Rather foolishly, I just took the shifter apart to clean it and most of the bits jumped out and flew all over the place. I've no idea how to put it back together correctly so if anyone could help I would be extremely grateful...

I've looked on Sheldon Brown's website and done a search on Google but nothing.

Many thanks.

Mark Stonich at Bikesmith Design may be able to help you. He specializes in old SA hubs and parts, among other things.

No response from Mark Stonich. I also contacted Sturmey directly but they no longer have any info relating to this shifter.

If anyone else has any suggestions I would be very grateful...

Could you maybe just buy a new one? I ws lucky to find one in a local bikeshop. I found some info some time back that the hubs are good, shifting is sharp since you`ve got the push/pull at the sme time. Also said that the shiftes are the weak spot. I remember a suggestion on using two different shifters if you can not find the right one. Sure it is`nt Sheldons site?

Also try the IGH forum : https://groups.yahoo.com/group/Geared_hub_bikes/

Sheldon Brown said that the shifters for the S5.2 were crap and should be replaced with a trigger shifter and a single friction shifter. I've never seen one like yours. It must be a complicated mechanism to operate two cables. I have an S5.2 with a broken stem-mounted shifter. Someone offered me a set of top tube mounted shifters, but they're just not my style.

Please PM me if you find a source for shifters or shifter parts.

Mine are similar to these S5.1 shifters:

I've never tried it, but you should be able to use a friction shifter for left side, cause it's only 2 position.

Really? I wonder why nobody else thought of that.

I was simply agreeing with you, or did you miss that?

Sorry, we're having our first hot weather of the year and I guess it made me cranky.

I found the SA S5.2 shifter I need on a UK site, but 25 British Pounds is more than I'm willing to pay. I suppose I could use a 3 speed trigger shifter on the right and an old Suntour friction thumb shifter I have on the left. One of the SA thumb shifters in the new catalog on the right and a Shimano bar end shifter mounted on a Paul Thumbie on the left would be nice, but really expensive.

No worries.
Say, could you send some of that hot weather our way?

Thanks for the responses.

I could just buy a new shifter (if I could find one) but since mine isn't exactly broken (to quote the old joke - I've got all the right pieces they're just not necessarily in the right order) I'd like to try and put it back together if possible.
