Beginner question: Chain/Gears

Sorry folks, I'm an amateur biker, so if this question is mind-blowingly stupid, my apologies in advance:

I've got an old early 1990s hybrid. Just today, on a long ride, the gears starting "jumping" (again, I have no clue as to terminology). When I was pushing hard and slow to get up a hill, sometimes my pedal would "fall through" a few inches, I guess meaning the chain would skip a link.

I assume this would call for a new chain. Am I right? How much should I be paying for the kind of service? Is it super easy enough for me to just buy a chain and put it on myself?

If your chain is jumping but stays in the same gear your problem is likely related to chain/sprocket wear. If your chain is jumping gears take a look at Sheldons website - http://sheldonbrown.com/autoshift.html

Thank you

I'm pretty sure it's staying in the same gear. So if my problem is related to "chain/sprocket wear".... what the heck do I do?
