1" threaded headset, 26.4 or 27.0? Newbie question

I just got this frame and fork. I bought a headset that is 30.2/ 26.4. Tange Passage.
I get that 30.2 is the stack height but I don't know if 26.4 is the correct size for the crown race.

I have installed a crown race before and it was tight but went on. I don't know if this crown race is going to go on there and I don't want to break it or damage the steerer. Maybe it needs a 27.0.

I don't have digital calipers. Is there a norm for the size?

It's a late 80's Univega frame made in Japan. Triple butted tubing probably made by Miyata.

You could check Sheldon's page and see if he lists the size crown for the frame you've got. Being more than 20 years old your frame may be something he looked at.

Thanks for that answer bikemeister.
I see that 30.2 is the cup outside diameter. I will do some more research. I could go to the LBS and have them check it.

If the fork is JIS (27.0 crown race) almost any LBS can mill it down to ISO very easily.

30.2 is not the stack height, but rather the ISO cup seat diameter. 26.4 is the ISO crown race seat diameter. If you Univega happens to be JIS (30.0 cup seat and 27.0 crown race seat) rather than ISO, it can easily be milled to accept ISO head parts, which will give you much more flexibility in finding replacements anyway.

I always take a file to the chrome before using the cutter.

I have a late 80's Univega that takes a 26.4 race.
Those $20 digital calipers are a great investment. You can use them to measure seat tube derailleur clamp sizes, seat post diameters, chain line, stack heights, BB shell widths, axle lengths, flange diameters and flange-to-center lengths for wheel building, Q-factor, headset and axle spacer widths, etc. Without doubt, it's the most useful took for choosing components sizes.

I am going to get the digital calipers. Good idea vredstein. You own a tire company and post here?

It's 26.4. I took it to the place I bought the headset. It's actually a big beach cruiser store but the headset was only $8.99. The Tange Passage.

The guy that assembles bikes pounded it on there. I was a little skeptical at first. English is not his first language. I asked him to please be careful of the paint.
All is well. The build will go forward today.
