Phil Wood BB Spindle Spacer?
I replaced cartridge bearings in a Phil Wood BB the other day and noticed the only thing controlling the chainline was a movable spacer. Why is that? Seems like a bad design to me...

I wonder about that too. It's all to easy to change your chainline just by tapping the axle! I've installed them, but never owned one. Try calling or emailing Phil Wood and ask them about their "bad design". They do respond to email.
I'm serious, ask them just as you asked here. If they are worth their weight in gold(which some of their parts are approaching), they should have a good answer, not one that's blowing smoke up the you-know-what.
Can you post any photos of the disassembled BB ?

What spacer? I adjust the chainline by how far the individual cups are threaded in.

I don't have any photos unfortunately. Maybe I'll call them on Tuesday.
Dobber: There are two cartridge bearings for each cup and a spacer sandwiched between them, I'm not sure how to explain it any better, but the spacer is what allows you to adjust the preload on the bearings by tightening the cups. This spacer can be moved with force along the spindle, thereby adjusting how far the spindle is inserted into either cup and modifying the original chainline.

I'm thinking of the plain vanilla bottom bracket. Two cartridge bearings, an axle and a housing.
