Howdy all. I picked up a used Raleigh MXR with 20" wheels, rear brake, and coaster brake for my 5 year old son since he outgrew the 16" bike we got from a friend last year. After installing a set of Ward training wheels, we had a problem with the chain falling off. I brought it over to our friendly LBS, who straightened out the wheel, adjusted the training wheels, and charged a mere $5.

Today on our little ride around the apartment courtyard, he on his bike, his little brother on his Kettler trike, and me on foot, the chain fell off again. The wheel is tilted about 0.5" off to the non-drive side. Clearly the axle is slipping in the dropouts on the drive side.

What can I do to keep the axle from sliding around? Thanks!

The simplest solution is to install a pair of serrated washers under the axle nuts. They might even be there already, but not in the right place. They need to be installed between the axle nuts and the frame with the serrations facing the frame.

thanks. I'll check that they're there, I would have figured the LBS would have caught that. However, they may be too worn (or cheap) to be effective or something. I'll pick some up at the hardware store and replace 'em and see what happens.
