    How do I remove my keo pedal from a Campag Carbon Crank. HELP

    Hi Team.
    I have serious crank issues. Today I went to remove the Keo pedals (to participate in the Look Keo pedal recall) on my Campagnolo Record Carbon cranks. The right pedal came off OK. Left pedal (LH thread) won't budge. In fact the alloy insert which is moulded into the Carbon Crank has turned a few degrees !!! That's bad isn't it.
    Has this happened to anyone else. I am thinking once the alloy insert starts to turn its all over rover!!! Its warranty time. What do you think ? Any advice on how to remove the pedal is greatly appreciated.

    You know the left pedal is reverse threaded. Shoot some penetrating fluid on the threads to try to get it loose. You did grease the pedal spindle when you installed them right?

    Yes its off alright

    Yes the LH pedal is off BUT, when the alloy insert started to turn that was when I stopped because,

    A) The force required to undo the pedal axle was less than that required to turn the insert.
    B) Had I not stopped at this point the bike shop would have not had to experienced the problem and would probably would not have believed me.

    I took the bike back to where it was purchased 6 months ago. They allegedly removed the pedal "Real easy" (as they would). The crank has now been sent to Italy to be checked. Is there no one in Australia suitably qualified to make such decisions?

    Since the square taper cranks are no longer made, if it is a warranty claim maybe a new model hollowtech crankset may be supplied in its place? It can't hurt to look on the bright side.

    I would recommend bringing the crank back to the shop where you bought the bike or crank and see what they say. They warranty on Campagnolo is usually 2 to 3 years, you should look and the owners manual and you will need your orginal bill of sale.     This happend to me. I ended up taking the insert out all of the way. I then let the insert and threaded part of the pedal spindle sit in penetrating oil overnight. I then cleaned the large threads on the crank arm where the insert goes and the insert as well. I coated the insert with red loctite and threaded it with the pedal attached to the crankarm. I let it sit for a day. With an allen wrench in a vise and the crankarm off of the bike, I unscrewed the pedal from the insert now stuck in the crankarm, where it should be. I made quadurple sure I was turning the crank in the correct direction as to not repeat the issue.

    I have been using the crank for a year now with no issue. If the red loctite did not work I was going to use the black. I am sure if the crank breaks and I get injured or die Campy wouldn't help you. I am not a chemist. I have no idea how loctite reacts with carbon fiber over time.

    I have never ever understood the bike mechanic/bike assembly mindset to tighten pedals down as if they were wrestlers and the pedals were the puny announcer they just put in a headlock. The pedals are threaded so that they tighten with each pedal stroke. I grease the threads, turn them tight and then give them a little more *snug* with the wrench. That's it 'cause that's all they need! Sorry to hear about the insert and I hope Campy fixes it for you. If they don't, ditch the square taper and go ultra-torque...now that is some sweet Italian hardware right there.

    Crank arm query

    Tribulous.
    Are you saying that the alloy insert that is bonded into the Carbon crank arm has an "external" thread which enabled you to screw it out of the carbon crank without minimal damage!!! as well as an internal thread into which you screw the axle. This is good info to avert other expensive disasters in the future. I like the idea of loctite I hadn't thought of that. There would be a squillion other bonding agents to use also.
    The story does have a happy ending though.
    I was doing this wrenching for a friend. She took it back to place of purchase (where 18 year old boys pretend to be mechanics) Campag rep after some wrangling is going to replace the entire chainset with the latest model 11 speed Record. (cause they dont make the 10 speed square axle model any more)
