Free-Hub Not Turning Smoothly

I've got a newer rear rim, that has a Shimano compatible free-hub that makes a grinding noise at one spot on every rotation. I've never had a hub apart so I've got to ask someone who knows....Is the hub shot, and then potentially the entire wheel, or can I fix/replace parts to make this work again?

Thanks in advance, CMC

Is it the freehub? or the wheel hub?

Yes, of course you can fix it.

You just need to replace your freehub, take a trip to your LBS and rummage through their used hub box buy one that looks good and swap the freehubs.

Or you can buy a brand-new one. They aren't very expensive. And while you're playing, here are two guides to opening and overhauling the rear-hub. And two for working on a free-hub. If you decide to do this - at your LBS, pick up some cheap cone-wrenches, 1/4 inch ball-bearings, and some good grade grease. Read the/or watch the instruction for the tools needed to replace a free-hub.

edit: nevermind i misread your post.

take your wheel off and lay it on its side. get some motor oil and drip it into the center of the freewheel while spinning it backwards. keep spinning and spinning and spinning. it might not quite fix the problem completely, but it may make it smooth enough so it doesn't bother you.

Thanks for your help everyone. I've printed the Park Tool instructions that Panther linked, and will try to get the tools and do the rebuild this weekend.
